Minor Twilight character becomes major player in movie promotion
The Jane character in the Twilight books, though important to the plot, is minor (though you wouldn’t know it from how often Dakota Fanning appears doing “Eclipse” promo, and from the extra screen time her character enjoys in the film). From the franchise perspective, it makes all the sense in the world to have the heaviest hitters do promotion. But has the Jane connection to the original story been overstated in the films?
In terms of screen time, it has. The Jane character has been unduly emphasized, undoubtedly to showcase the popular and demographically appropriate Dakota Fanning. Though released scenes from “New Moon” and “Eclipse” featuring Jane may have happened in the book, the film’s producers and screenwriters chose Jane-rich scenes over others with equal or more importance to the original story.
This emphasis on Jane in Twilight film renditions partially justifies her participation in some of the most celebrated star appearances of the season. Though any other actor could have been chosen to front an official movie poster, emcee the world premiere of the theatrical trailer, or be the fourth person to sit alongside Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner on The Oprah Show, it was Dakota Fanning all the way.
